The data is based on the FBI’s collection of 13,922 homicides that happened nationwide in 2019. They were able to collect supplemental information for 16,425 of those instances. Weapons are broken into groups that depend on the main type of gun: handguns, rifles, shotguns or a category that is for when the type of firearm they were using is unknown. The FBI also tracks the number of homicides committed by weapons other than firearms. These include knives, cutting instruments, and bodily weapons like people’s hands, feet, and fists. Roughly 24% of all murders are committed by using non-firearm weapons in the United States.

Despite the fact that rifles (including assault rifles) are not as popular as other types of deadly weapons, many experts believe it would still make a difference if they were banned. Almost all lethal shootings are committed using handguns. According to the FBI, weapons other than guns are used in most killings in the US. Weapons like hands, fists, and feet were found to be used more often than firearms. An NIH study found that assault weapons are only used for 3% of crimes.
